Frequently Asked Questions

Before you register, please read the Parent Guide which describes in general our house league programs, playing rules, and expectations of parents, coaches, and players.

Registration

Q. How can I register?

All registrations must be done online.  You can register online at home, or at the Club using the Club's computer.  Payment can be made online by Visa or MC, or by Debit/Cash/Cheque at the office.  We do not accept any paper registration forms.   Click here to go to the registration page.

Q. When do I get Income Tax Receipts?

The tax receipt is produced at time of registration as part of the online registration and payment process and is sent to you via e-mail.  You can also access tax receipts any time by logging in to your Member Zone account and clicking on "Receipts".

Q. What happens after I  register?

We will send out emails to all registered players the week before the sheduled start date with the schedule and team assignments.

Q. Volunteering - What Help Does the Club Need (and What Do the Jobs Require)?

We primarily need Coaches and Convenors. The requirements and responsibilities for these positions are as follows:

Coach

For our Micro U4-U6 Divisions we require TEAM LEADER for each group of 6 players.

For our U12 programs, we assign a volunteer HEAD COACH to each team. Experience is not required, but enthusiasm is a must. Your job is to organize and communicate to your team members, distribute uniforms and equipment to your players at the beginning of the season and to coach your team in practices & games in accordance with the Club's scheduled events. Each coach can also select one MSC registered player to join your child on your team.

For our U14 to U18 programs, we assign a volunteer HEAD COACH to each team. Experience is not required, but enthusiasm is a must. Your job is to organize and communicate to your team members, distribute uniforms and equipment to your players at the beginning of the season and to coach your team in both practices and games in accordance with the club's scheduled events.  Each coach can also select one MSC registered player to join your child on your team.

If your skills and interests do not fit either of these roles but you are willing to help in some other way, feel free to contact Michelle  (or mark the appropriate volunteer box on the registration form).

Q. Closing Days

  • The Micro & U7 Divisions each have their own Closing Day activities involving all players in the division. It occurs on the last day of their season.
  • The U8 to U10 divisions have a Closing Day Festival & BBQ mid-August.
  • The U11-U16 divisions have a Closing Weekend & BBQ towards the end of August that revolves around the Championship play-off games and presentation of awards for the season.
  • The U18 divisions have a 2-day Closing Weekend tournament towards end of August. Awards revolve around the Championship play-off games and the standings for the season.

Special Requests

Q. Can I make a Special Request (e.g. to have my child play with a friend)?

WE DO NOT ACCEPT ANY REQUESTS. For house league teams, a primary objective is to develop balanced teams. Special requests can severely complicate this process and they can also result in some teams being “stacked”. Thus we have adopted a firm “no special requests” policy.  CARPOOLING IS NOT A VALID REASON FOR A REQUEST.  This is not as big an issue as some may think, carpooling can often be arranged with other parents on the team.

Q. I have two boys/girls who are quite close in age. Can the younger one play on the team with his/her older brother/sister?

We believe that players should play with their own age group as much as possible. We do not move players up to higher divisions for the sake of convenience. It would also be unfair to turn away a player who legitimately belongs in that age group as a result of taking a younger player. Rather than leave players on waiting lists however, we do occasionally move players up when a division is full and the next higher division needs additional players. This is only done at the club’s discretion. A registration cannot be accepted that is dependant on this or any other condition.

Q. I am a Volunteer Coach, can I request a player to be on my team?

Yes, we do allow each volunteer coach to request one registered player (in addition to their own child) to join their team. In order to make this request both you and the parent of the player need to e-mail the office to make the request.  In cases where there are two parents acting as Co-Coaches no requests will be allowed.

Vacations and Other Absences

Q. We are planning to take an extended vacation this coming summer. Should I still register my son/daughter?

The Club allows a player to miss a maximum of 3 games and/or practices in addition to a maximum of 3 weeks vacation (9 evenings) during the summer season. If a player misses more than this number, he/she can be removed from the team. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, it is unfair to the coach and the other players on the team to have someone away for such a large part of the season. Secondly, there may be players on the waiting list who are available but aren’t getting the chance to play. Thus, we ask that you not register anyone who will be away for an extended period.

Q. Depending on the schedules, we may have a conflict with other sports/activities. Should we still register?

As in the previous point, you are making a commitment (on behalf of your child) to be at practices and games on a consistent basis (with the exception of 3 weeks or less vacation time). If you cannot meet this commitment, it is unfair to the coach and the other players. We provide you with a tentative schedule to assist you in your planning. The tentative schedule generally becomes the final schedule; however, changes to these schedules may be necessary once we know how many players have registered for each of the divisions. If you register and then later withdraw (before the deadline), you will be charged the administrative fee.

During the Season

Q. How do I know if a game is cancelled due to bad weather?

You may be notified if fields have been closed and/or games cancelled due to bad weather. This doesn't happen very often and it is usually because of continuous rain for a day or more. If a cancellation does happen, it will be announced on the homepage of our website by 4:00pm on that day, via Facebook/Twitter (MarkhamSC) and by email if possible.

In the absence of a field closing notification, coaches and their teams must show up at the field.

  • For the Micro soccer ages (U4-U6)  the Mentor Coaches will make the call and use their best judgement in determining if they should continue or cancel the session.
  • For the House League ages (U7 - U18), if a game is scheduled, the referee shall have the sole authority to cancel the game due to weather. If a team does not show up to the field (in the expectation that the game will be cancelled), they may forfeit the game.
  • For the House League ages (U7-U18) if a practice is scheduled, the coach(es) must use their best judgement in determining if they should continue or cancel the session. Coaches should use the Club policy on cancellations due to weather in order to make their decision.
Q. When are player photos taken?

Player photos are taken for the Micro U3-U6 age groups only.  Pictures will take place at the field during the regularly scheduled session, dates will be sent out to parents once they are available.
